Kailua Canoe Club: A Values-based Holistic Approach to Leadership

This qualitative case study of Kailua Canoe Club (KCC) on the island O’ahu investigated nature leadership in a Hawaiian outrigger paddling community. Conversations with paddlers, coaches, and board members revealed values-based holistic approach to (Best, 2011). Those values were scribed into club’s mission statement 50 years ago intention establishing KCC as space connect kupuna (respected elder) wisdom, develop skills, honor canoe, ocean, each other. A component kuleana (responsibility) is constant reflection those values, mentoring younger paddlers becoming future leaders who embody club values. article details how manifest – developing personal skills for sake team success, respect ohana (family).
